Versa-N is an iris recognition device designed for biometric authentication, created in collaboration with the startup company Irisian, which owns cutting-edge iris recognition technology. Unlike face recognition, iris recognition offers higher security and accuracy, as the iris is a unique and stable biometric trait that is harder to spoof than facial features.

The challenge of the design was to address the time it takes for the device to recognize a user’s face and adjust the camera to align with their iris. Users might not realize the camera can automatically rotate, often resulting in awkward movements, such as crouching to align with the device.

To solve this, we introduced led light visualization to indicate the camera’s automatic rotation, guiding the user to stand in the correct position without needing to bend down. Additionally, to enhance scanning efficiency, we used infrared laser technology to project a red line on the ground, showing users the optimal distance to stand for accurate scanning. The design ensures a seamless, intuitive user experience with improved positioning guidance and scanning accuracy.

In the initial experience flow exercise, we discovered the biggest user pain point was that users had to manually adjust their height to align with the camera for iris recognition, making the process slow and inefficient.

To address this, we introduced facial recognition to detect eye position, then used algorithms and a motorized mechanism to adjust the camera module’s angle automatically. We also explored using lighting to emphasize the presence of this feature.

At the same time, both facial and iris recognition technologies require a certain distance between the user and the camera.
To address this, we used infrared projection technology to intuitively indicate the optimal standing position on the floor for the user.
