Project Context

In early 2024, our luminaire portfolio faced a common scaling challenge: a fragmented landscape of numerous SKUs and off-the-shelf designs that lacked a unified "Philips" soul. To regain design leadership, Design and Business functions initiated a two-year strategic project (concluded in late 2025) to define a cohesive Product Design Language System (PDLS).

 

The Strategy & Challenges

Unlike traditional, rigid design guides, this PDLS was built to be a living, breathing ecosystem.

We navigated four key challenges:

 

  • Democratizing Design: This guidebook isn’t just for designers. It was crafted for business stakeholders and global suppliers alike, replacing technical jargon with intuitive visual logic to ensure everyone—regardless of their creative background—can "speak" the same language.
     

  • Agility Over Rigidity: Rigid formulas (like fixed radius-to-length ratios) often fail when applied to diverse architectures. Instead, we focused on a "Styling Inspiration Guide" approach, providing clear aesthetic guardrails while allowing the flexibility needed for various luminaire forms.
     

  • The "Eyecare" Narrative: Philips spans from medical tech to consumer goods. To avoid a "clinical" look that might alienate home users, we anchored our identity in Eyecare—a bridge between professional wellbeing and domestic comfort.
     

  • Future-Proofing Consistency: To prevent "new member bias" and maintain long-term consistency, we built a top-down logical pyramid: starting from the Global Philips Brand, filtering through the China Business Scope, defining Personality Traits, and finally landing on the Physical Design Identity.

     

The culmination of this two-year journey is a comprehensive 76-page strategic guidebook.​


More than just a showcase of the final design identity, it serves as a living archive of our methodology. By documenting every step of the definition process—from initial brand archetypes to final physical details

—we’ve created a 'North Star' that ensures logic-driven consistency for years to come, regardless of team changes.
