Philips light bulb has long been an iconic product, symbolizing warmth and heritage in lighting. Yet despite its strong legacy, the category has seen limited innovation in recent years. This project reimagines the decorative filament bulb by leveraging LED filament technology together with a modern design language, exploring new possibilities for filament form and expression.
A key objective was to develop filament structures with high adaptability, allowing them to integrate seamlessly across a variety of glass bulb shapes. Traditionally, filament designs have been largely flat — perceived as a simple organic line within the bulb.
Inspired by contemporary design trends that emphasize three-dimensional geometric forms, precision, and control, this project translates geometric lines into carefully replicated and vertically aligned structures, creating a sculptural filament that reads as a defined volume and surface rather than a flat element.
In parallel, the project also rethinks the manufacturing approach of filament decorative bulbs. Current production processes rely heavily on handcraft steps, often resulting in outcomes that feel organic but lack precision and repeatability. To achieve a more controlled aesthetic, parts of the process were redesigned to incorporate industrialized precision methods. For example, the LED filament substrate is machine-cut before LED layout and coating, ensuring accuracy and consistency, while certain conductive supports are formed as single pieces through stamped metal processes. Together, these changes enable a new level of refinement while maintaining the emotional warmth associated with filament lighting.
